Your first sign-in

The first time you sign in, Folke opens a Getting started window if it still needs a few details from you. Leave can’t be counted properly without them, so the window stays open until they’re in. The fields are right there in the window, so it only takes a minute.

The steps that hold the window open come first. On a computer they’re marked Required, and on a phone they’re counted out as Step 1 of 2 and so on:

  • Add your country, and your region where it matters (for example England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland in the UK). This decides which bank holidays you get.
  • Add your date of birth. Beside it is a switch to show your birthday (day and month only) to your team, or keep it to yourself. Your team never sees the year, though org admins can see the full date on your profile. You can change the switch any time in your profile.

Org admins are also asked for two setup steps, until the organisation has them done. Usually that’s whoever created it.

  • Configure leave types: choose when the Leave year starts in, and the Annual leave allowance as a number of days. This is what everyone gets each leave year. It becomes Annual Leave’s allowance, which team roles and team members fall back on unless they’re given their own. To make Annual Leave unlimited instead, go to Organisation Settings > Leave & Calendar later.
  • Import bank holidays: if Folke doesn’t have bank holidays for your country yet, this step is already done for you. Mark your own days off as closures under Dates instead.
  • Import bank holidays: choose a country. This year’s and next year’s are added straight away, and each new year after that by itself. Only countries Folke has bank holiday data for are listed. If yours is missing, email hey@myfolke.com.

See Leave types and allowances and Team roles for how allowances work from there.

Then come the optional steps, each with Skip for now: a profile photo for everyone, and your organisation’s logo for org admins.

Anything left waits on a Getting started card at the top of your dashboard. Let’s go on a step takes you to where it’s done, and each one ticks itself off once it is.

For everyone except org admins:

  • Add your country
  • Add your date of birth
  • Upload a profile photo
  • Submit your first leave request
  • Install Folke on your phone
  • Add Folke to your calendar

Booking some time off is one of the very first steps, so planning a break is part of joining.

For org admins:

  • Add your country
  • Add your date of birth
  • Configure leave types
  • Import bank holidays
  • Upload a profile photo
  • Add your organisation logo
  • Create a team role
  • Invite a team member
  • Install Folke on your phone
  • Add Folke to your calendar

On Pro, and during the free trial, a few more steps appear:

  • Book your first desk, once a room has been added to the rota, and Set your working week, for everyone except org admins.
  • Add a room to the rota, for org admins.

Most steps tick the moment they’re done. Two take a little longer:

  • Add Folke to your calendar ticks the first time your calendar app fetches your feed, so it may not tick the moment you subscribe.
  • Install Folke on your phone ticks the first time you open Folke as an installed app, from your home screen or dock.
  • I’ll do this later on a step puts that one off. It shows as ticked on the card, but the % Complete bar in the desktop sidebar only counts the steps you’ve actually done.
  • I’ll do these later at the top of the card puts the whole card away. There’s no setting to bring it back, though it does come back by itself when Folke adds a new step.

Required steps can’t be put off.
